There are some decisions in life that you must definitely think through because of the investment they represent. Sometimes we are blinded just by the cost and we do not take into account the positive outcomes. If you are looking to make this big step for your business and include some professional surface treatment solutions, we would like to share our experience and help you decide on whether you need a spray booth or not.

Spray booths. Why are they necessary?

Spray paint booths represent one of the greatest strides made toward cost-effective productivity in modern manufacturing. They have been designed to accommodate almost any manufactured item, from the smallest plastic components and intricate furniture to the largest semi trucks and assembly lines.

In addition to streamlining production, they also provide critical safety for workers and the surrounding environment, controlling hazardous materials to prevent spills, contamination, and many health-related issues.

It must be also taken into account that during the last decades, most of the needs in the refinishing sector have changed. The following table can compare the main changes between those different eras that we are going to analyze in this article:

ThenNow
Energy Cost
  • There were no concerns about costs, given the fact that energy was quite cheap.

  • Continuous increases on energy costs are forcing companies to find more effective energy solutions

EnvironmentalPollution
  • No public concern about pollution

  • Solvent-based paint was being used for each operation

  • Heavy public concern and real need to lower carbon footprint

  • Most sectors use only environment-friendly water-based paints.

Hazards of DIY painting

There are lots of laws and guidelines to ensure safety for people and the environment when speaking of working with paints. This is due to the level of toxicity and flammability that sprays, adhesives, etc.produce within a spray operation. In the same way, explosions can occur when fumes build up near an open flame.

A good installation and ventilation are critical to prevent health issues and other possible problems.

Quality of the result

A wide range of imperfections may occur if not treated well inside a spray booth. With this document we will try to list the most important of them:

WATER BLISTERS ON SURFACE

Small blisters on the surface of the paint that can be seen once it dries.
Caused by: Humidity inthe air, moisture absorbed by the substrate, condensation due to sudden changes in temperature, application in wet environment, debris on the Surface or insufficient drying of the substrate.

LACK OR LOSS OF PAINT ADHERENCE

The paint layer lifts easily like fish scales.

Caused by: Incorrect preparation of the painted surface, presenting grease, dust, dirt or moisture. Incorrect surface sanding. Inadequate primer.

ORANGE PEEL OR LOOSENING

Rough or granular surface of the paint produced by bad stretching.
Caused by: Fast solvents. Low humidity or high temperature in the environment. High viscosity Paint. Painted part was too hot.

CRACKINGS

Small cracks in the paint surface. They can expand to the whole piece.
Caused by: Paint was applyed on a humid, or not completely dry layer. Incorrect preparation of the painted Surface

SILICONES

Small circular holes appearing on the paint surface.

Caused by: Pollution of the work environment by the use of silicones, aerosols, etc. Traces of oil in the applyed air.

SOLVENT BUBBLES OR BOILINGS

Small circular blisters that appear in the surface layer during the drying process.
Caused by: Pollution in the work environment caused by the use of silicones, aerosols, etc. Ambient temperature too high. Short period of evaporation before drying.

DIRT, DUST OR PARTICLES

Dirt or dust depositing on the wet paint and sticking to it.

Caused by: Insufficient cleaning of the surface to be painted. Presence of contaminants or debris in the air.

WRINKLINGS

Areas with wrinkles in the surface of the paint during application or drying.
Caused by: Non-uniform drying (excess of thickness, insufficient evaporation time, no suitable catalyst, etc.). Choosed paint not compatible with the base coat.

BLURRINGS

Areas with dullness and a whitish veil.

Caused by: High relative humidity in the environment. Lack of air exchange during the drying process at room temperature. Paint layers too think.

MOST OF THESE QUALITY PROBLEMS COULD BE SOLVED THROUGH A SPRAY BOOTH. WHY?

1.Spray booths provide a clean environment for the vehicle/piece, protected from dust or particles originated in the working ├írea

2.Spray booths provide a uniform airflow and a zero turbulence environment. This is important because even if some particles reaches the inside (mostly through workers), the vehicle will be protected by a thick air layer.

3.The air reaching the spray booth goes through a set of filters to avoid any posible particle from the outside

4.Temperature (drying) & humidity control through humidifiers and burners enables to achieve optimal results given a specific type of Paint

5.Moreover, lots of imperfection could be seen instantly thanks to hight brightness LED panels installed inside the booth. This is very important to match paint shades also.
