Hazards of DIY painting
There are lots of laws and guidelines to ensure safety for people and the environment when speaking of working with paints. This is due to the level of toxicity and flammability that sprays, adhesives, etc.produce within a spray operation. In the same way, explosions can occur when fumes build up near an open flame.
A good installation and ventilation are critical to prevent health issues and other possible problems.
Quality of the result
A wide range of imperfections may occur if not treated well inside a spray booth. With this document we will try to list the most important of them:
WATER BLISTERS ON SURFACE
Small blisters on the surface of the paint that can be seen once it dries.
Caused by: Humidity inthe air, moisture absorbed by the substrate, condensation due to sudden changes in temperature, application in wet environment, debris on the Surface or insufficient drying of the substrate.
LACK OR LOSS OF PAINT ADHERENCE
The paint layer lifts easily like fish scales.
Caused by: Incorrect preparation of the painted surface, presenting grease, dust, dirt or moisture. Incorrect surface sanding. Inadequate primer.
ORANGE PEEL OR LOOSENING
Rough or granular surface of the paint produced by bad stretching.
Caused by: Fast solvents. Low humidity or high temperature in the environment. High viscosity Paint. Painted part was too hot.
Small cracks in the paint surface. They can expand to the whole piece.
Caused by: Paint was applyed on a humid, or not completely dry layer. Incorrect preparation of the painted Surface
Small circular holes appearing on the paint surface.
Caused by: Pollution of the work environment by the use of silicones, aerosols, etc. Traces of oil in the applyed air.
SOLVENT BUBBLES OR BOILINGS
Small circular blisters that appear in the surface layer during the drying process.
Caused by: Pollution in the work environment caused by the use of silicones, aerosols, etc. Ambient temperature too high. Short period of evaporation before drying.
DIRT, DUST OR PARTICLES
Dirt or dust depositing on the wet paint and sticking to it.
Caused by: Insufficient cleaning of the surface to be painted. Presence of contaminants or debris in the air.
Areas with wrinkles in the surface of the paint during application or drying.
Caused by: Non-uniform drying (excess of thickness, insufficient evaporation time, no suitable catalyst, etc.). Choosed paint not compatible with the base coat.
Areas with dullness and a whitish veil.
Caused by: High relative humidity in the environment. Lack of air exchange during the drying process at room temperature. Paint layers too think.
